2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processors

Intel Second Generation Xeon Scalable Processor: Performance Per Cost Analyzation with PC-E Scores

Users familiar with the letters on the first generation Xeon Scalable will notice one missing: F. F was Intel’s letter for SKUs with added Omni Path Fabric on package. Intel stated it will not be making fabric processors for this new generation, which perhaps goes to show you how popular it was.

As we know that Intel has four main segments in their first Generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processor Family.

  • Xeon Platinum product segments,
  • Xeon Gold product segments,
  • Xeon Silver product segments,
  • Xeon Bronze product segments.

Second Generation Xeon Scalable processors have six main segments

  • Two Xeon Platinum product segments
  • Two Xeon Gold product segments
  • Xeon Silver product segments,
  • Xeon Bronze product segments

To deliver an average of 1.36 times higher performance 1.42 times better performance-per-cost by adding more cores, increasing cache sizes, or by boosting processor frequency.

Name R Suffix for dual-socket mainstream server systems

Name T suffix for single-socket mainstream server systems

Name U suffix for entry-level server systems

Processor capacity is upgraded where Workloads such as virtualized clouds, hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) is critical.

Serverental covered the initial announcement back in November last year, which showed that Intel was placing two of its large enterprise core silicon dies into a silicon package, to create something with double the cores and double the memory in something smaller than a dual socket system. This product, according to Intel, was designed to be purely focused on that high-density compute market, where space is at a premium. The company stated that where HPC previously had two processors, they could now have the equivalent of four.
